Strawberry Shortcake

Nobody knows Strawberry Shortcake like us... we did grow up in Plant City, you know!
Did you know that licking the beater from the whipped cream makes strawberry shortcake taste so much better?
(Cool Whip? No way! Don't even speak of it.)

Ten years ago I fell in love in the way that only 19-year-olds can. Brandon was handsome, charming, funny, and obsessed with music--he loved everything from the Jackson 5 to Johnny Cash. We spent hours talking while driving along winding Kentucky back roads and listening to U2. (The Best of 1980-1990 album had just been released.) Other friends will remember other things about Brandon, but I remember his beautiful smile, his easygoing spirit, and the way he made sure to tell me that he thought I was beautiful at any and every opportunity.

We were in love, so the obvious next step was to make the entire world aware of our love. We decided to go on a road trip to Brandon's home town, so I could meet his parents. Our visit was over Easter Weekend. We left on Thursday afternoon after I had (finally) finished a Spanish exam. I remember the 10+ hour drive just like I remember the rest of my times with him. We had so much fun. We laughed, sang, and listened to a lot of Johnny Cash.

My next memory is of flashing ambulance lights, a neck brace, and being placed on a stretcher. Ten years later I still have no memory of the accident, although I was told that we were trapped in the car for over an hour. It wasn't for several hours that I would learn that Brandon had died in the ambulance while we were being transferred to Savannah.

Brandon died on Good Friday, 1999. His funeral was on Easter Sunday.

Every Easter season I remember Brandon and our time together, and I mourn his death. I think about what knowing him meant for me, and how his death changed me.

Brandon's death was one of the most significant events of my life, but ten years later, my first response to remembering the trauma is gratitude.

I am so grateful for a God who works in the midst of suffering. God showed himself to me in the midst of great pain and heartache, and I have grown to know him so much more deeply as a result of my heartache. I do not believe that God made this happen, just like I don't believe that God makes any suffering happen. There are so many in our world who have lost so much more than I have, and who have hurt much more deeply than I did. I believe in a compassionate God who longs to meet us in our suffering and show his face to us.

Arriving at a place of gratitude has not been an easy process. I still struggle as a result of the accident. I fear that I might lose a loved one again. I make sure that my sons have the safest car seats I can find. I pray when someone I care about is on the road. I cling to the words of Isaiah: "For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you" (Isaiah 41:13).

My fears help me turn to Jesus and remember that he held my hand through a very difficult time. When difficult times come again, he will continue to hold my hand.

At 19, I couldn't have imagined that I would be part of such a tragedy. Car accidents are so terrible because a laughing, healthy, whole person can be broken so suddenly. The loss just seems too fast. At 19, I also couldn't have imagined the blessings I have received over the last ten years. I can't begin to write them down.

So it is with gratitude that I remember Brandon Mitchell and grieve his death this Easter Season.

Some of you reading this didn't know me ten years ago. You might not have known this was part of my story. Some of you who are reading walked beside me, prayed for me from afar, or held my hand. I am so thankful. Some of you felt his loss in your own way. I just wanted to take some time to mark the day and remember a beautiful life.

Driving

If you need to know, he is going to Wal-Mart. He told me so himself.

2 Months Old

Today our Ezra is two months old. We can hardly believe he's already been with us this long. We remember the first two months with Isaiah as being the most difficult, so we can't believe how much easier it's been with Ezra so far. He is generally a pretty laid back guy. He already sleeps for 5 or 6 hour stretches at night most nights. He loves his brother and his mom and dad, and he likes to smile, gurgle, and coo. We are enjoying him so much. If you wonder how much he looks like Isaiah, click here and see Isaiah at two months. Let us know what you think!

Snow Day

On March 1st, Isaiah experienced his first snow.
(I haven't added pictures to my computer in too long.)

Where we've been

Things are a bit crazy this week at our house. D. is gone on a Spring Break trip to Eastern Kentucky, and my mom, brother and niece are here to hang out while he is gone, so the craziness that is a two-year-old and a 7-week-old has been multiplied. But we also have more helpers.

So far, we are cooking many fun things that D. doesn't like. Tonight we had Greek Salad, Tampa-style. So yummy.

We went to story time at Square Books, Jr. and to two parks today.

Anna and Isaiah took a bath together, which involved a lot of splashing and fun.

Pictures will come later.

the big announcement

Things that are gross...

This is a cartoon mouse. His name is Jerry. He is cute. D. has told me to imagine Jerry when I think of the real, live mice that are coming into our kitchen. They are not cute. They are nothing like Jerry.

Yes, it is true. We are having a mouse problem. Over the last two weeks, we have killed five (5) mice, all in our kitchen. Last Friday, I called the exterminator. Last night, we killed two more mice. I don't think the exterminator did his job very well.

What is it that really freaks you out? For D. (and for my brother) it is snakes. For some people, it is spiders, roaches, or other creepy crawlies. For me, it is mice. I hate them so much. I just think of them scurrying around in the night and I get all creeped out. Ewww...

Hopefully, our mouse problem will go away soon. All I need is one more thing to worry about.

Feeling Better

We just wanted you all to know that Ezra seems to be feeling much better over these past two days. He had been having trouble keeping his milk down, but he has been nursing more often this weekend and he's been spitting up less often. The breathing treatments seem to really help with his congestion as well.

Thanks for praying for us!

We have so much to share with you... pictures of Isaiah playing in the snow, photos of our trip to the Zoo, and some funny quotes... but we are behind on our blogging for obvious reasons. Expect more soon!

Quote of the Day

Me: "Isaiah, are you eating dirt?"

Isaiah: "YEAH I'm eating dirt!"

Pray for us

Please keep us in your prayers these days.

Ezra has been congested for a while, and on Monday night he was coughing so hard we thought he was having some trouble breathing. We took him to the Emergency Room. Thankfully, he tested negative for RSV, which is a cold-like virus that is very dangerous for infants, but they still wanted to keep him and observe him for 24 hours. We returned home from the hospital yesterday morning. He is still very congested, and still vomiting several times a day. We are continuing the breathing treatments they were giving him at the hospital here at home.

He is strong, and we all think he's going to be fine, but please pray for his congestion to go away and for him to heal.

We are exhausted, especially me, so please pray for me to be able to catch up on rest and that I won't worry too much.

Thanks, friends.

Mardi Gras

We decided to participate in a Louisiana/Mississippi tradition this year. We made a King Cake for Mardi Gras, which is the Tuesday before the beginning of Lent. I found a recipe online for making the dough in my bread machine, which made it really easy. The tradition is to make this round yeast roll and decorate it in the Mardi Gras colors, which are green, purple, and yellow. You're supposed to put a little baby Jesus doll somewhere in the cake, but we didn't have one, so we didn't do that this year. As you can see, it was a lot of fun!
